Glass casting is the process of creating glass sculpture by fusing or melting glass in handmade molds. Handmade molds present endless design possiblities to the glass artist, fostering an imaginative approach to the medium of glass.
On the first day we will learn how to turn an object sculpted in clay into a hand cast mold. Techniques will be shared for sculpting and texturing clay, making a 2-layer plaster/silica/grog mold, calculating mold volume, loading cleaned molds with glass and setting up an electric kiln for firing the glass.
On the second day we will demold, clean and critique the glass sculptures. Next-step options for your art will also be discussed.
Over the workshop days, you might get messy - please wear every day clothing, closed toe footwear and bring an apron. Masks will be provided when we work with powders.
Please bring a brown bag lunch; light refreshments will be offered.
